Practical experience may be a useful qualification for admission, but it is not mandatory. Applicants must complete their J.D. degree before applying for the Ph.D. in law. This means that students can apply during their third year of law school, but most candidates have at least one year of post-law experience. Often this experience will be an internship, but it can also include a legal practice, a public interest scholarship, government work, or even experience in a persecution that has largely nothing to do with the law. The PhD Admissions Committee also welcomes applications from candidates with a number of years of post-law experience. Applicants who have spent more than a few years practicing after law school should relate their real-world experience to their scientific program or use their personal statements to explain their change of direction. Please also note that Yale Law School will consider applications from individuals who have accepted admission through deferred college and junior admissions programs. When trying to find your way between a Doctor of Laws degree and a PhD in another discipline, many of the same considerations come into play.
Please note that doctoral programs in economics, political science, history, and other fields train researchers to produce research that answers the central questions of these disciplines. The scholarship, which is produced by law schools — and expected of applicants for teaching positions in law schools — is largely driven by different sets of questions. While many students are able to apply their education in other disciplines to the study of law, a significant benefit of the Ph.D. In the law program, it is specifically designed to prepare students for careers in law, rather than academia in another field. We should also point out that the Doctor of Laws program welcomes applications from candidates with interdisciplinary research interests – significant continuing education in other disciplines as part of the Doctor of Laws program, where applicable. Yale Law School is committed to equal opportunity and accessibility for all applicants who demonstrate great academic and personal promise, regardless of their citizenship status.
