A law degree is not a reason to accept a claim. From top law firms at the bar to little-known law firms on the Main Street, non-lawyer graduates are just as capable of earning an apprenticeship as their LLB counterparts. In the rare cases where employers prefer law graduates, they will indicate this, so unless you hear otherwise, candidates can confidently proceed with the conversion path. Many recruiters tell us how much they value employees with language skills and scientific or technical degrees, especially when their clients` businesses will benefit, and humanities degrees require many of the research, analytical, or communication skills lawyers need. You can apply for apprenticeship and vacation programs as early as the second year, so if most of your first grades for the year are third-graders or 2:2, you`re going to struggle. If you get a first, it will certainly impress (at least on paper); A 2:2 will make your app a pretty joyless opportunity. A confirmation by a letter from your guardian (or better yet a medical certificate) could be helpful. Plus, you need something big to get through the 2:2 — a year or more in great work, more in-depth study, or awesome volunteer work could do it. Of course, none of this is a guaranteed solution. « If you have average or below-average grades, you`re really going to struggle, » one recruiter told us.

The time and effort required to complete the initial application form for a single law firm, let alone several, should not be underestimated. Many candidates are studying or employed part-time or full-time. As a result, they will have external obligations to strike a balance alongside networking, attending open houses, and researching various law firms.

In my opinion, all candidates deserve adequate compensation for their time. So I thought of common ground that could make the application process easier for the thousands of people involved. Did we mention that competition for learning and students is fierce? When graduate recruiters hire someone fresh out of college, they are making a bet on that candidate`s likely skills. For example, adult candidates are often attractive to recruiters, and some – often niche or smaller regional companies – are actively looking for people with previous work experience. With age comes wisdom and probably an impressive array of transferable skills and industry knowledge.

A watering can approach is not recommended: sending the same cover letter to 50 companies will get you nowhere.
