There are nearly 85 million teachers worldwide: 9.4 million in preschool; $30.3 million in primary education; 18.1 in lower secondary education; 14.0 in upper secondary education; and 12.5 in higher education. In the Dominican Republic, Ecuador and Guyana, we support computer-based learning technologies to help teachers tailor lessons to students` learning needs. The Bank worked with the Government of Malawi to create an up-to-date, accurate and comprehensive database on teachers and their assignments, to identify and analyze factors influencing teacher assignment (e.g. road access to schools, electricity, distance to the nearest shopping mall) and to develop a categorization of schools that led to policy reforms to reduce inequality at no additional cost: New teachers target schools in need. And the 20% of teachers who work in the most remote schools receive a significant bonus (about a third of the average salary). The Bank worked with the governments of the West Bank and Gaza Strip to develop the Palestinian Teacher Education Index for Teaching Skills, which sets clear expectations for teachers as they progress in their careers, provides benchmarks for teacher evaluation, and guidelines for their professional development.

Reforming professional development to be flexible, short and mixed: Just as student learning must meet their needs, teacher professional development must be tailored to the specific needs of teachers and be available to teachers at appropriate times. Technology makes this possible. This is a normal struggle that teachers have to face. Not all students will like them. It`s worse when they talk openly or loudly about their dislike, to the point of disrespect. In the Lao People`s Democratic Republic, the Bank is supporting a media campaign to explain the importance of teachers to the country`s future as part of a package of measures to increase teachers` intrinsic motivation. In the West Bank and Gaza Strip, the World Bank also supported improved teacher training through a full-year program in which university professors conducted face-to-face workshops, followed by learning circles led by university professors in which teachers worked in groups. presented assigned tasks, commented on each other`s work, designed lesson plans, teaching aids, games and other teaching strategies. inter alia. With all the stress and pressure they receive from the classroom, teachers need validation and appreciation. They need to hear that they are doing well to be encouraged to keep their passion. Improving the profile of the teaching career: Student learning is higher in countries where teaching is a prestigious profession.

In Korea and Singapore, for example, more than 65% of teachers agree that society values their role. I`d like to make a practical appeal to my fellow teachers: Could you take an hour to write just 250 words to your state legislators (you can find them here) who open the door to your classroom to share the important work you do, why you do it, and what concerns you as a voter? Think of it like back-to-school night for lawmakers, but without the stress of staying late and meeting students` families. Build career development structures to motivate and reward performance: Teachers typically have limited career opportunities beyond promotion to the position of school principal (often defined by years of experience and/or political connections). In contrast, performance-based advancement opportunities attract highly qualified candidates to apprenticeships in high-performing systems such as Singapore.
