First and foremost, there is an ultimate intercessor who stands alone, Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God. When Adam and Eve sinned, a great gulf arose between God and mankind because our sins separate us from the holy and righteous God. In the New Testament, each prayer necessarily takes a new form in its relationship with our Lord, and in this prayer of intercession it participates. At first, Christ taught prayer for those « who use you with contempt » (Matthew 5:44, the King James Version). How completely it changes the whole spirit of prayer! We breathe a new atmosphere of higher revelation of love. The Lord`s Prayer (Matthew 6:9-13) has this character. Its original word is social, domestic; Prayer is the address of children to the Father. Although some of the requests are not original, their place in prayer and the general tone of the Master`s teaching show the social and altruistic spirit that does not permeate the old dispensation. « Thy kingdom come » directs the Order of Petitions with its essentially intercessory character. The forgiveness of others, which is the measure and demand of our own forgiveness, brings even those who have wronged us to the same level as we have, and if the request is genuine, how can we refuse to pray for it? And if for our enemies, then certainly for our friends. In Matthew 7:11, the good things the Father seeks must be interpreted as part of the good things we should do to them if we want others to do it. And of this Spirit, intercessory prayer cannot be lacking. We find the spirit of intercession in the requests of those who have sought Christ`s help for their friends, whom he has always recognized so quickly: intercession is a prayer for another and springs naturally from the instinct of the human heart – impelled not only by affection and interest, but by the recognition that God`s relationship with man is not only individual.
but socially. Religion, therefore, includes man`s relations with his fellowmen, just as, in man`s social position, intercession for one another is a common event which becomes the function of appointed officials in the development of society; In religion, as in judicial and judicial proceedings, spontaneous and loving prayer to God for others is transformed into regular and ordained service of a duly appointed priesthood. Intercession should therefore be noted: Notice that the three verses quoted contain « for us, » « for them, » « for us. » Everyone emphasizes the ongoing work of Jesus in heaven as our intercessor, intercessor or mediator to intercede for us (intercessors, mediators). Intercession for a person is interceding for his own benefit. Intervening with a person is generally understood to mean talking to them to get them to change their position in relation to a situation or relationship with another person. Three entities are involved. The intercessor enters with one for the sake of the other. It is not easy to determine the extent to which intercession was considered a special priesthood duty.
The priestly ministry itself was undoubtedly an intercession. In the priest and in the offering of sacrifices also for the individual, and certainly in national functions, both in regular and occasional ceremonies, the priest represented the individual or the community. In Joel 2:17, priests are clearly told to « weep between the vestibule and the altar, saying, `Spare your people, O Yahweh.` » Malachi 1:9 asks them to intercede with God, and the living scene in 1. Macc 7:33–38 shows the priests interceding against Nicanor on behalf of the people. Traditional legal model – The advocate, the Christ, works for us because we are unable to deal directly with the Father, the divine judge. Since Jesus is both man and God, He can bridge the gap and represent our cause. Samuel is the true successor of Moses and, in conjunction with his intercession of life, intercession appears again clearer and more effective. Hannah`s song, though primarily out of gratitude, is not without intercession (1 Samuel 2:1-11). In Ch, we find David`s prayer for his house (1 Chronicles 17:16-27); David`s prayer for deliverance from the plague (1. Chronicles 21:17); David`s prayer for the people and for Solomon offering gifts for the temple (1 Chronicles 29:10-19); Solomon`s prayer at the temple dedication (2 Chronicles 6:1-42); The prayer of Asa (2 Chronicles 14:11); Jehoshaph`s prayer (2 Chronicles 20:5-13); Hezekiah`s prayer for the people who had not prepared to eat the Passover (2 Chronicles 30:18); Josiah`s command to pray about the book (2 Chronicles 34:21). In the prophets, we listen to the prayer of Ezra (Ezra 9:5-15); Nehemiah`s prayer (Nehemiah 1:5–11); the Levites` prayer for the nation (Nehemiah 9:4–38).
In relation to the theme of intercession, the most interesting question arises as to whether the Holy Spirit is not represented as an intercessor in the Scriptures. The text in which the doctrine seems to be taught is Romans 8:26f: Many of these prayers are recorded in Scripture. Noah`s sacrificial act may have been partly of this kind, for it is followed by a promise from God on behalf of race and the earth in general (Genesis 8:20-22). It is also Abraham`s prayer for Ishmael (Genesis 17:18); Abraham`s prayer for Sodom (Genesis 18:23-33); Abraham for Abimelech (Genesis 20:17). Jacob`s blessing on Joseph`s sons has the nature of intercession (Genesis 48:8–22). His dying blessing for His sons can hardly be considered an intercession; it is rather declarative, although in Joseph`s case it approaches intercession. The absence of a spoken intercessory prayer from Abraham to Moses can be observed and shows how intense personal and individual religious consciousness was still in its undeveloped quality. In Moses, however, the social element finds a later development and is interesting because it takes up the spirit of the Father of believers.
Moses is the creator of the national spirit. It elevates religion from its somewhat selfish character in patriarchal life to the higher and broader level of a national and racial community. Biblical Healing Model – Christ acts as an intercessor for our benefit in various ways, but certainly not to defend us against a harsh judge. The Father himself is also an intercessor for us.
