From October 2016 to September 2017, clinic staff treated 874 people in a variety of ways. In most cases, staff and volunteers provide counselling and counselling, including referrals to other services or volunteer lawyers. In some cases, clinic staff provide more comprehensive assistance, such as assistance with the preparation of court cases. In addition to Tarnofsky, NYLAG`s Pro Se clinic is staffed by a full-time lawyer and paralegal, and is supported by articling students and law graduates who regularly volunteer there. You will be accompanied by other private lawyers entering and exiting the program. Affected by COVID-19? NYLAG`s new hotline can help you solve your legal problems for free. To make an appointment, please fill out the clinic admission form on your computer or smartphone. You can also call 212-659-6190 and leave a message, including your phone number. The SDNY, which financially supports the clinic, recently approved the launch of a mediation project that proved to be very effective in a short period of time. Clinicians and volunteers are now authorized to represent litigants under settlements.

Litigants gain an unbiased overview of the strengths and weaknesses of their business, leading to faster resolutions. More than half of the litigants represented by clinic staff or volunteers have settled their cases. Navigating the federal court system is long and complicated. For those who do not have a lawyer, the experience is even more overwhelming, especially when they are competing with a party who has a lawyer. And unrepresented litigants are more likely to lose their case. Please let me know as soon as possible if you are interested in joining us in one or more of these clinics. Due to space constraints, we can only accommodate the specified number of volunteers at each location, so we cannot accept everyone who wants to participate on a given day. **NEW :** To register for one or more one-day legal clinics, please fill out this form. You can contact me with any questions, but the only way to register for the clinics is via the online form. Due to the high number of interested volunteers, please note that it may take 2-3 business days to respond to your volunteer request. Please wait for confirmation before planning to go to a website. Thank you for your continued support and commitment to serving those in need in our community.

The clinic, which is not part of or operated by the court, assists non-incarcerated litigants in federal civil cases, including civil liberties, workplace discrimination, labor law, social security benefits, foreclosure, and taxes. Robyn Tarnofsky, director of the NYLAG Legal Clinic for Pro Se Litigants, shares the highlights of the clinic and a client`s moving story. That`s where we come in. Our clinic helps create a level playing field by providing free legal advice to non-detained litigants who represent themselves or are considering representing themselves in civil cases in the Southern District of New York (SDNY). Our clinic assists litigants in most types of federal civil cases, including issues relating to civil rights, workplace discrimination, labor law, social security benefits, foreclosure, and taxes. We offer a range of services to litigants including: Legal clinic for temporary protection status on 25. In August 2015, Secretary of Homeland Security Jeh Johnson announced his decision to extend Haiti`s Temporary Protected Status (TPS) designation for another 18 months.

Haiti was originally designated for TPS on January 21, 2010, after a major earthquake devastated the country. After consulting with other federal agencies, the Department of Homeland Security has determined that current conditions in Haiti warrant an extension of the designation period for current TPS recipients. This decision means that current beneficiaries of the TPS Haiti who wish to renew their TPS status must re-register within 60 days from 25 August 2015 to 26 October 2015. NYLAG works with advisor Mathieu Eugene to assist Haitian nationals who wish to extend their TPS. In this clinic, NYLAG will provide information about Haiti TPS and volunteers from the clinic will be needed to help complete applications with participants. Haitian Creole language skills are appreciated. NYLAG staff will be on hand to directly supervise the volunteers. Friday, September 25, 2015 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

In late 2016, NYLAG opened a litigation clinic at the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York (SDNY) — one of the few federal district courts across the country seeking to provide legal advice to the large number of civil litigants who appear in federal court without a lawyer by approving and funding a local legal clinic. While most litigants are plaintiffs, about ten percent are defendants. The legal challenges faced by clinic visitors are diverse and varied: clinic visitors included, for example, an immigrant woman who was sued by a hospital for paying her late husband`s medical bills and threatened with garnishment of her salary; a woman who chased the police after her home was broken into by police with guns, while her young granddaughter was playing on the floor; And a woman who sued her employer for sex discrimination and received a five-figure severance package through mediation. As a public health precaution, the New York Legal Assistance Group`s Legal Clinic for Pro Se Litigants has temporarily suspended all face-to-face conversations with clients effective Tuesday, March 17, 2020.

Limited legal assistance will continue to be provided, but only by appointment and only by telephone. During this time, we cannot be available for visitors to the clinic. In many cases, non-LDOC cases are diverted to another more appropriate location, such as family court or housing court, saving litigants time and anxiety and keeping the court`s limited resources.
